This was one of the first classes I took in the MAED program at MSU. This course involved exploring different processes to teach and learn using technology. We did projects using microphones and digital video recorders that were posted on YouTube. This class was very educational in terms of opening my eyes to the possibilities for using technology as a quality teaching utensil.

This class helped me learn about the history of teaching. We spent a lot of time reading about educators who helped form some of the ideas and strategies that we take for granted today. We also learned different techniques that would help us work with adult learners instead of adolescent learners.

This class gave me my first taste of writing and creating large projects. The biggest take away I had from this class was how hard and how much time you need to put into a graduate level class. The bulk of this class was spent working on a research project that we were able to choose. I chose to research and discuss the difference in leadership styles between educators and collegiate coaches. The project helped me learn the differences in these leadership styles and how I can use them to become an effective leader.

This was essentially an anatomy and physiology course. We spent our time learning muscles and bones but then how they are injured and ways to avoid those injuries. We also created a project that was a collection of people who parents could contact with additional questions I could not answer or to take their children to in case of an accident or injury.

Fall 2012
In this course we explored the different psychological issues that come with coaching. We see multiple coaches punishing kids for mistakes and not asking why they are making the mistakes and how we as coaches can help them overcome their mistakes. I learned different processes and techniques to help athletes deal with issues they are having both on and off the court.

Promoting Positive Youth Development in Sport

Fall 2012
This course explored the ways that we, as coaches, are able to promote youth sports in a way that will help keep children active later in life. As a country we are one of the largest and unhealthiest in the world. Part of the reason for this is we are taught that winning is everything at a young age and children are turned off quickly and choose to stay inside their comfort zones, watching t.v. and playing video games. We also explored how hard our kids are pushed in contrast to those in other countries. It is important to realize we need to create a positive atmosphere for youth when it comes to playing sports.

In this course we looked at different strategies to create budgets in higher education. Also, we looked at ways for prospective students to finance their higher education goals. While we did not do any actual number crunching we were able to explore and discuss theories for why college is expensive and how we can help change it.

This class was extremely interesting to me because it opened me up to a world of issues that I would not have considered. We spent time studying varying court cases and the results in order to determine what could have been done differently to avoid the problems that they had to deal with. We also discuss preventative options that would help me prepare to be a safer and more effective coach.
